Where Are Germany's Tech Jobs? The 2026 City-by-City Breakdown
Berlin leads, but the full picture is more interesting than you think. We ranked every German city by tech job volume, and some of the results are genuinely surprising.
· Jay Gajera
Data based on a snapshot of 5,636 active tech job listings from 1,066 companies across Germany, captured on 26 March 2026 via the Kariyan job discovery engine. Numbers reflect a point-in-time view and are updated regularly.
The Top 10
When we ranked German cities by the number of active tech job listings, the top three were predictable, but the order and the gaps between them tell a more nuanced story than most candidates expect.
| # | City | Jobs | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Berlin | 369 | 9.8% |
| 2 | Hamburg | 229 | 6.1% |
| 3 | Munich | 221 | 5.8% |
| 4 | Frankfurt | 168 | 4.5% |
| 5 | Stuttgart | 152 | 4.0% |
| 6 | Leipzig | 138 | 3.7% |
| 7 | Cologne | 131 | 3.5% |
| 8 | Dusseldorf | 119 | 3.2% |
| 9 | Darmstadt | 104 | 2.8% |
| 10 | Nuremberg | 97 | 2.6% |
Berlin leads decisively with 369 listings, driven by its massive startup ecosystem, the European headquarters of companies like Zalando, HelloFresh, and N26, and a steady influx of international talent that creates a self-reinforcing cycle of English-friendly hiring. Hamburg takes second place at 229 listings, powered by its media-tech sector and growing fintech scene. Munich is close behind at 221 listings, anchored by automotive tech giants (BMW, Siemens) and enterprise software.
Together, these three cities account for roughly one in five of all German tech jobs. That is significant, but it also means 80% of opportunities are elsewhere.
Surprise Entries
Leipzig's emergence matters for job seekers because competition for roles there is significantly lower than in Berlin or Munich. Fewer applicants per role means better odds, and the cost-of-living advantage means your salary goes further. For international candidates willing to look beyond the obvious choices, cities like Leipzig represent a genuine strategic opportunity.
Other noteworthy entries include mid-sized cities with strong university ecosystems and specialised industry clusters. These cities often offer the best ratio of job availability to candidate competition, a metric that matters more than raw listing counts when you are actually trying to get hired.
Beyond the Big Three
The geographic distribution of German tech jobs reflects the country's federal structure. Unlike France (Paris) or the UK (London), Germany has no single dominant tech city. Instead, it has a distributed network of specialised hubs, each with its own industry focus and company mix.
Frankfurt is the obvious choice for fintech roles. Stuttgart and Munich dominate automotive tech. Hamburg leads in media and logistics technology. Cologne and Dusseldorf have strong enterprise IT markets. And Berlin remains the default for startups, consumer tech, and roles at international companies.
This distribution is actually an advantage for job seekers. It means you can align your city choice with your industry specialisation, rather than being forced into a single overheated market. A backend engineer interested in autonomous driving has more options in Stuttgart than in Berlin, regardless of what the raw listing counts suggest.
Choosing Your Base
When deciding where to focus your job search, raw job counts are only one factor. Consider cost of living (Berlin and Leipzig are significantly cheaper than Munich), industry alignment (match your skills to local company clusters), language environment (Berlin and Darmstadt are most English-friendly), and quality of life (a personal preference that no dataset can answer for you).
The best approach is to target two or three cities that match your profile and apply broadly within them. A focused geographic strategy lets you build local knowledge, attend meetups, and develop a network, all of which dramatically improve your chances of landing interviews.
Kariyan's location-aware matching lets you set preferred cities and automatically surfaces roles in those areas, so you never miss an opportunity in your target market.
